Normal body temperatures for your family
19 October 2021Parenting, Family
It has never been more important to be aware of our body temperature. Monitoring your temperature can give you valuable insight into your family’s health.
You may be surprised to know there are different averages of human body temperature according to age range. For example, a newborn’s average temperature is around 36.4c, compared to an adult’s average temperature which is 37C.
Everybody is different and therefore your normal body temperature range might be different to somebody else’s. A normal body temp range for an adult can be anything from 36.1c – 37.2c. It’s good to know what your and your baby’s base temperature is, so you know when things don’t seem quite right.
When is a temperature reading a fever?
As average temperatures differ with age, so do fever temperatures. For an adult, if your temperature is 38c and above, that is classed as fever. According to Calpol “if your baby is between 3 to 6 months, the threshold is slightly higher if his/her temperature is 39°C (102°F) or higher.”
There are many baby thermometers on the market at the moment and it can be confusing as to which thermometer is the best for you and your whole family and may leave you thinking, “what type of thermometer should I be using”?
What is a digital thermometer?
‘Digital thermometers generally have a digital display, that are usually placed under your arm. It works by putting a voltage across its metal probe and measuring how much current flows through it. A microchip inside the thermometer measures the resistance and converts it into a measurement of temperature.’

What is an Infrared thermometer?
Infrared thermometers use a lens to focus the infrared light thermal radiation onto a detector, which converts the radiant power to an electrical signal that can be displayed in units of temperature.

Research shows both digital and infrared thermometers are accurate in taking temperatures. However, when it comes to taking babies or toddler temperatures, it is definitely easier to use an infrared ear thermometer or a forehead thermometer. It is quicker to point the thermometer and take a quick reading than to wrestle with a toddler and wait for a temperature to be read under arm.
The NEW Vital Baby PROTECT™ 4 in 1 contactless thermometer is an infra-red contactless thermometer that detects the temperature in just 2 seconds and gives the result on its large fever alert colour changing, digital display. For peace of mind there is also a last memory recall function. It is quick, accurate and simple to use.
Why is contactless best?
The Vital Baby PROTECT™ 4 in 1 contactless thermometer can be used discreetly on the forehead without having to disturb a sleeping baby or wriggling toddler. It can also be used to read the temperature of bathwater or liquids such as milk before feeding. This contactless thermometer can even be used to take the temperature of any room in the house so that the necessary actions can be taken.
As well as being able to use the Vital Baby PROTECT™ 4 in 1 contactless thermometer on the forehead, there is a tiny and precise tip, making it suitable to use in the ear for all ages, from newborn to adult.
